Blazon

Azure an eagle volant affronty head to the sinister between three fleurs-de-lis, on a chief Or three mullets Gules;

Symbolism

The design is based on the arms granted to Dr. Brown’s father, Brigadier James (Buster) Sutherland Brown, by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1929. The gold fleurs-de-lis on blue are commonly used for Brown arms in Scotland. The eagle is that of the Royal Canadian Air Force, commemorating his service during the Second World War as a Flight Lieutenant in 177 Squadron. The gold chief and red stars symbolize the Sutherland name, using the reverse tinctures of Sutherland in Scotland. The name Sutherland is borne in honour of James Sutherland, MP, a prominent minister in the Laurier government and a great friend of Buster’s parents.

The black walnut tree is a symbol for Norfolk County, Ontario, where Buster’s birthplace of Simcoe is located. The coronet establishes this crest as a Canadian branch of the family.
